Ages ago I did some work for a bar in Leeds that I've done quite a lot of work for in the past. They asked me to quickly draw some v simple spot drawing to go down the side of a corporate menu, this was a super quick few hours kinda job. I did it and got £30. My boyfriend works at the bar and started noticing the drawings being used everywhere - other menus, signage around the building, social media posting, tickets, promo material, stuff at their other site in Liverpool, even vinyl stickers up on the menus.
Obviously this isn't on but I didn't know how to approach getting it sorted. Eventually I emailed the head guy and said I needed to chat about licensing. They were completely fine with this and asked for a price. Cue me being unconfident about approaching this again. I educatedly guessed a price and sent it over and they were fine with it and happy to pay it.
Big lesson in confidence and standing up for myself. People aren't malicious, they just aren't aware of licensing rules and whatnot, the bar are very lovely and supportive, they just didn't know they couldn't just use my stuff everywhere. V glad I grew the balls to get this sorted! All good in the end!
