LAURA CARLIN | OFFSET DUBLIN 2017 from OFFSET on Vimeo.
Laura Carlin came in towards the end of first year and it was a pretty transformative talk in my practice development
- I found a similar talk she did in Dublin which is on Vimeo and I've watched it lots of times
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Kids are the best artists, we shouldn't be 'teaching them to draw' in certain ways, they already see the world in a unique way, we can learn a lot from them
- Being confident in your own image making - she doesn't conform to making overly polished or digital work. V reassuring. Analogue illustration has a place
- Timeless image making, exists beyond trends
- She sent physical 3D cards to clients, got some traction from this. Importance of physical things
- Residencies! She contacted embassies and asked if she could go and draw - v cool. why not!!
- Importance of roughs and the charm within roughs.
- She works on multiple spreads at once, takes the pressure off a single image
- Evolve and learn new skills - she took evening classes in ceramics when the recession hit - but she's now so well known for her ceramics
- Looking for the nuances and ways to tell stories in a non obvious / cliche way
- Recognising the importance of childhood, making links between what you draw now and what you were interested in drawings as a kid
- Importance of inspiration away from illustration
