Back in June I responded to a callout on Instagram for a cocktail bar in Leeds who were looking for illustrators to illustrate the stories behind the cocktails of their new menu. I was really excited for this opportunity because the bars identity is very well designed and they are obviously engaged in the visual side of things. I took on 2 illustrations for them, and stupidly my excitement got the better of me and I didn't do a formal contract, instead it was just agreements of details over emails.
Anyway I finished the job on the 8th June and he said he would get payment over to me soon. I still hadn't received payment a month later and so I emailed enquiring about the money, he replied saying he was really sorry but they were waiting on the brands they were working with to pay them so that they could pay me. I thought okay fair enough I'll give them some time.
Many emails later and on the 30th November - he says "I'm going to pay the artists this week as its unfair that you guys are still waiting on payment when the brands are dragging their feet"
no payment, I emailed 3 more times until getting a response on the 22nd January saying, "We’ve still not been paid, but this is getting silly now so I’ll sort your payment today."
no payment. I send 3 more emails, no response.
19th February I stopped being so apologetic in my emails and with the help of Jas typed,
"Hi ****,
I'm sorry to keep bugging you but do you know when I will get paid?
I finished this job in July and you said in an email on November 30th that you'd pay the artists that week, and on Jan 22nd you said you'd pay me on that day?
I don't mean to come across as rude and I know that you're still waiting on payment for the brands, but this is my job and how I support myself through uni and I could really do with this money.
Hope you understand,
Cait
Feb 22nd no reply. So I sent it to the main bar email rather than his and I got a response and FINALLY GOT PAID.
There wasn't any maliciousness on his end and he wasn't trying to rip me off, I just think it was lack of organisation. It's bad that the brands hadn't paid them yet, but they are a cocktail bar and whilst £300 is a lot for me, its really not for a cocktail bar. They could've paid me sooner.
Lessons learned:
- Always have a contract
- Don't let excitement for a job take over from contracts etc
- Stand up for myself
- Don't be so apologetic in emails, stay friendly but professional
- Join the AOI
- Don't work for them again
