MURALS : (left - Nesslee, right: Laura Berger)
Murals are bold eye-catching ways of exposing the public to illustration without them actively seeking it out. They can spread political messages, for example the Nesslee image above which illustrates racism and activism within the context of the recent popular TV show Orange is the New Black, therefore relating to modern audiences who can understand and connect with the piece. Murals are beautiful ways of applying illustration in a large format, aside from how people may infer illustrations as being an art form which exists mainly in smaller paper size?
Painting a mural is on me bucket list
Absolutely love this installation in Spitalfields Market Joey Yu did a couple of months ago. She created this tapestry of portraits across a weekend by inviting the public to stand infront of her and have a chat whilst she drew them, "a tapestry of stories that grows over time". A beautiful example of involving the public in illustration and applying it in the context of the everyday.

CERAMICS - Laura Carlin
Illustrator and ceramicist Laura Carlin uses clay to tell stories and create new ideas. She speaks about how ceramics have been used for centuries as a method of storytelling, eg the Greeks, and how she uses it as a way to show themes and explore new ideas - "inviting people to engage with and challenge their own views of what constitutes illustration."
MUSIC VIDEO - Oliver Jeffers for U2's "Ordinary Love" video
Oliver Jeffer's uses stop-frame animation / live drawing with his recognisable handwritten typography to make a really unique interesting music video. Connecting type and illustration to music is an exciting idea and one which has reached millions of people in this video.
EMBRIODERY - Sofia Salazar
Illustrator and embroidery artists Sofia Salazar brings her fascination with history and museums and her love for illustrating them onto fabrics through wall hangings and clothes. It's important to her that her work remains functional :
" I need my work to be useful somehow; I like it better that way. That’s one of the reasons I went into fashion. I love it if my work can be worn, can be interacted with. I want my work to be involved in others people’s lives. I would love to have made someone’s favorite sweater."
